Hey everybody, Austin here this week is going to be another collaborative style episode, and we reached out to all sorts of different business owners in different industries all across the internet and we asked the question what is the advice that you wish you had received when you started your entrepreneurship journey? Here are the answers.
Speaker 3:Hi, this is Maria C Palmer. I am the best-selling author of On the Rocks, the Primitana story, and something that I wish that I would have known before I got into publishing 17 years ago is that nobody's going to believe in you or your project like yourself, and there are so many people that are looking for reasons to tell you no. But you have to find your. Yes, you have to find that one person, that one company, that one opportunity that's going to work for you. And once you get that opportunity, other doors open. So do not stop. Always believe in yourself. Do not give up. If I gave up, it was so easy for me to give up along the way. I had over 240 queries and only 17 people wanted to see my manuscript and out of those 17 people, only one offered me representation and my book took almost a year to sell and only one publishing company ended up wanting to publish my story. And now I'm a best-selling, award-winning author. So it can happen for you. Don't give up. Believe in yourself.
Speaker 4:Hey Monica and Austin Daniel Lawson here from Parallax Transformations, focusing on coaching emerging entrepreneurs, and now more into peak performance for successful entrepreneurs. The one thing that I really wished that I got the advice and the learning that I got when I started out was about not doing so much to achieve success. It wasn't about the doing, but more about who I needed to become in order to be successful, so it was less about the resources that are available to me and more about the resourcefulness that I needed to develop within myself so I could take care and take charge of any opportunity out there. When I experienced this and once I learned this and grasped this idea, then everything changed, and that's when success started to fall into place. Not only that, I got much more clarity in where it is that I was heading and what I was creating. So that's the message that I love to share now with others that are going out and building their lifestyles, their businesses and everything that they're falling in love with.
Speaker 5:Hi, my name is Krista McLellan and I am the founder of Money Making Mamas and E&M Bookkeeping Solutions. I'm a bookkeeper and QuickBooks online geek. The biggest thing I wish I knew when I started was to focus on profit, not sales. It's really important to know that you are able to make a profit and to engineer that by knowing your numbers, which is why I teach getting comfy with the F word finances. I built my business as a single mom after losing my husband to cancer and now I love empowering women and other business owners to get comfy with their F word knowing their numbers and getting on the road to financial freedom by taking control of their money, understanding those funky little reports that no one seems to pay attention to, because that's how you drive profit.
Speaker 6:My name is Mahara Wayman. My business is mindfulness. With Mahara, I'm an author, motivational speaker, life coach and a podcaster. And boy oh boy, what I wished I had been told or understood.
Speaker 6:When I first began my entrepreneurial journey which, by the way, has been about two and a half years. I wish someone had said to me there is no such thing as overnight success, because everything takes time. I was so excited about my decision and I was filled with such creativity. I did everything I could to understand what I was getting into and how to best set up an online business, and I bought into this idea that take this course and you'll earn six figures in six months, for example. And two and a half years later, I'm just now sort of sitting in my authenticity and understanding how I am going to bring my greatness to the world, for example. So really I would have loved someone to say hey, Mahara, it's beautiful that you're doing this. Can I suggest we do some inner work on all of the limiting beliefs that are going to come up as an entrepreneur and know that there is work that you have to do. There's work that you have to do.
Speaker 7:Hey, Austin and Monica, Thanks for sending me over this link. It's Brandon Gano here, so my business name is what If? And it's a business consulting agency. I had previously run and actually sold a business for the last five years. That was a screen printing business and I don't know if 90 seconds is long enough to tell you about all the things I wish I knew before I got into business, as I'm sure you know. But what we have now is really a business consulting business growth company and what I wish I knew before, if I had to pick one thing, it would just be understanding that all business, when you boil it down, the essence of business is the same. It's exchanging value for money and when you kind of build on top of that, you have the tools to put into place and architecture to put on top of any business so that you can scale it. Understanding basic fundamental principles.
Speaker 8:Hey, Austin and Monica. My name is Les Watson. I have two businesses. One is Get More Time and the other one is Creating Success, Coaching, and the advice I wished I'd received back when I was a child or when I was growing up would have been you don't have to do it alone. You can actually have support, have someone alongside you, whether it be a mentor, whether it be a coach, whether it just be someone that you can give a listening ear to or they can give you a listening ear. So my advice would be don't do it alone. Get people around you so that you can do the things that you want to do and overcome those obstacles that you have in your life by having someone point out that you can do it another way.
Speaker 9:My name is David Enlo and I started my San Francisco family photography business about four years ago. When I started my business, I was diving into a lot of online education, mostly for creatives, and a lot of that education spends a lot of time talking about the importance of valuing your services and not underpricing yourself you risk burnout but also creating a client base that is accustomed to unsustainable prices. I actually wish I had taken that slightly less to heart, because I priced myself high right from the beginning. The journey to building that initial client base was super, super slow. Yes, the clients I did find were quote unquote qualified, but it meant that I spent the first few years of my business thinking a lot more about marketing than actually taking photos.
Speaker 9:To become a better photographer, I needed to be taking more photos, so if I could sit myself down four years ago, I would recommend pricing myself more in the middle ground. Initially build a portfolio on my skills. I would also suggest finding ways to take pictures that help grow my network. Offer free photos to local business owners in exchange for some sort of exposure. Build a relationship with nonprofits you believe in and share your skills with them. Take pictures at community events. Share them with the organizers. These are long term investments that will serve you very well in the future.
Speaker 10:Hey, I'm Joey. I own Media Shark. I also have a few other e-commerce brands that I work with. Specifically, I do a lot of consulting with digital marketing.
Speaker 10:I like your question a lot about what piece of advice, or even let's say pieces of advice that you wish you would have known prior to starting your business One of the biggest ones that I think it's ironic that it's such an easy say quote I heard but easy saying is just in your head, you're dead.
Speaker 10:I think there's so much truth to that, whether in your own personal life or just in general, and especially in your entrepreneurial journey and business ownership Just when you take one big step back and you think about all the thoughts that go through your head, all the problems, all the issues you're facing a lot of times they're all in your head it just takes a second to step back, reevaluate, get coaching, get help. That's not a bad thing, I think also, too, another big thing is just the fact that anything that you want right now is available. It is the easiest time in the world to make money. What the online digital landscape's giving you, from e-com to coaching, to just the availability of knowledge on YouTube. I think sometimes we get so caught up in our own lives and feeling that it's hard, and sometimes we even feel like sad for ourselves, when the truth is there's somebody on YouTube that is doing something that you wish you could do, earning the income you want, and all you got to do is just hit play. Maybe watch the 30 second ad.
Speaker 11:Hey everybody, my name is Adam Shibley. I am the host of podcasting business school. I've been a full-time professional podcaster since 2019. I started my very first podcast in 2015. That's when I first became an online entrepreneur. The one thing that I wish that I knew then, that I know now, is how important being the expert of my brand is, specifically the term expert positioning as a podcaster. A lot of times, people feature other people and then they create courses or programs, products and services and they don't sell very well because you are featuring other people as the expert within your brand. Once I started to feature my own content with solo episodes and coaching style episodes, and on my social media I'm featuring testimonials from clients, I'm really kind of making myself the star of my own brand. My expert positioning really ramped up and that allowed me to create more super fans, which transformed into people that were excited to work with me as clients.
Speaker 12:Hello, I'm Rico McPherson, the founder of Waymaker Services. My business is focused on small business consulting and financial education. We have been helping business owners and families reach their money goals for over two years now. I want to share some vital advice that I wish someone had told me when I first started my journey. Number one you don't need to have all the answers. Knowledge isn't power if it isn't being applied. Start with the right people, make written plans and then execute. Number two your mindset is everything. Fear might always be there, but you have to find ways to win. Your fear of failure shouldn't be stronger than your fear of not learning from failure. Number three entrepreneurship can be rough and lonely because most people don't understand what you need to do to get to the wins. Don't let that stop you. Stay healthy and focus on your goals. And number four networking is a superpower. You don't need to brave the journey alone. Create supportive networks and tap into the unique abilities of those who add value in those networks. It's about collaboration and not competition.
Speaker 13:Hey, my name is Melissa Miller. I'm a former certified nursing assistant and full-time state home mom and spousal caregiver now for my husband following his diagnosis of epilepsy, and today I'm a caregiver and business coach, helping caregiver entrepreneurs like yourself find that healthy balance between being a caregiver and a business owner and realizing that it doesn't have to be a choice. And if I go back and tell myself my former past self something in the beginning of my caregiving entrepreneur journey, it would simply be that it takes time. It takes time. It doesn't happen overnight.
Speaker 13:And when you're dealing with extenuating circumstances being at caring for a loved one, like a parent, child or spouse, or dealing with your own health or some other extenuating circumstance that you have to give yourself grace in that, and it is certainly not your fault. Your dream to build your business is not there by mistake, it's for random. It's there for a reason and you have been given this responsibility to be a caregiver for your loved one for a reason. So just give yourself grace, don't give up and just take it one season at a time. Rome wasn't built in the day and I am not expecting you to do the same either.
Speaker 14:Hello Austin and Monica.
Speaker 14:My name is Emilia Fulmer-Buray.
Speaker 14:I have been in business now for five years and I am a business empowerment coach, helping and leading women to empower themselves to create a business that serves the rich life that they desire.
Speaker 14:And basically the biggest thing that I do is lead women to trust themselves so that they can build their business from a place of fulfillment inward, rather than looking success and fulfillment based on external factors like revenues, like number of clients. Because from experience I found that when I went after the revenues from that external place of validation, all I did was feel empty, and the more I did it, the more I ended up just turning around and burning everything to the ground and starting over again, and I have done that multiple times. So I would say if there was one piece of advice I wish I had received and learned to do from the start, it was to trust myself and to move from that place within me in my body of what felt good and right to me, and to always, always trust that rather than trusting what other people were telling me I had to do, how I had to be, what success was going to look like.
Speaker 15:My name is Katie Lane.
Speaker 15:I'm the co-founder at Thrive Alcohol Recovery, where we help everyday people to reduce their drinking from the comfort of home using a science based approach.
Speaker 15:I've been running the company for about two years now and there's so much I could say with regards to the advice that I wish I would have received, because I really just kind of jumped in head first kind of the fail fast, fail often mentality, which I think has served me.
Speaker 15:But when I really think about it, the one thing I wish I would have known when I started was that the challenges that I was going to face and the closed doors and the obstacles and the times of defeat and discouragement these are all things that really forced me to innovate and learn and grow and try new things and get creative about how I was running the business and how I was reaching people who really could benefit from our support. I think sometimes when these challenges come up as an entrepreneur and many of us can relate it can really be defeating and discouraging and we question whether or not we're doing what we're supposed to be doing. But I've really learned that these are the times where I am really challenged to be more creative and think outside the box and find new and innovative ways to run the company. I hope this helps.
